John Chausmer developed a fascination with snakes at an early age. He began his career in herpetology at age 6 alongside his father, who encouraged the hobby. He told his mother his first baby boa would only grow to around four feet long, but it ended up being over nine feet in length. He tried to explain to her that size doesn’t matter.

Moving out on his own at the age of 18, John began breeding snakes immediately. He traveled to reptile shows once a month, talking to breeders and learning as much as he could about the business. As Google wasn’t around in those days, finding information required a lot of legwork.
